Sharing the Joys of Backyard Homesteading

2026 Kidding

Last year, we gave the girls a rest as I was going through a year of oral chemo. This year, we were happy to have 4 kids.  Kahlan gave us three on January 1, 2026, and Cidney had 1 baby a week later.
These babies will go to new homes in April.
This will probably be our last year breeding Kahlan and Cidney.  They are getting older and are ready to retire as pets.
We are currently looking for two young doelings to replace them.

Dairy goats, chickens, meat rabbits, fruit trees, gardens... All these things, and many more, make up our backyard homestead.  Here is a site that tells our story and gives ideas to help you along your homestead journey.

I don't pretend to know everything. I'm still new at this Homesteading thing, but I do want to share what we have learned through experience.  Perhaps our errors and wins can help you be wiser.

HAPPY HOMESTEADING!

NEWS FROM THE HOMESTEAD

A New Adventure
10 years ago, as I was dreaming of a homestead, I decided the best meat production would be rabbits.  I researched and read, and then took my kids to visit a family that raised meat rabbits.  We saw their setup, played with the babies (grow-outs), and bought a frozen rabbit to try (if we can't eat it, we should not raise it).  Once we were settled on our property, we decided to try Cornish Cross meat birds.  I already had the equipment and knowledge about chickens, so it seemed the logical plan.  We raised and processed meat birds for several years. Each year, the price of chicks, shipping, and feed went up.  They were messy, stinky, and had to be kept in the garage for a while, and that was not fun!

So I turned back to my original idea of rabbits!

While in the middle of chemo last fall, a friend sent a post about a rabbit hutch and breeding meat rabbits for sale. We had planned to wait a year until I was feeling better. But the price was too good!  I jumped on it.  We now raise meat we can breed ourselves!

There has been a learning curve, but we are happy with the results!
